If hot tubs are covered, how does cold weather affect pH?
Even with a cover on, cold weather affects water in hot tubs in three key ways….and all of them can shift pH.
1. Cold slows down the chemistry.
When the temperature drops, the water molecules move more slowly.
Sanitizers and other chemicals reactions are slower, which means the pH can wander more easily before things rebalance.
2. Pumps run differently in winter.
Your spa turns on more often to maintain temperature.
More pump cycles = more aeration.
Aeration naturally raises pH, even under a cover.
3. The cover keeps heat in — but not the environment out.
Cold air around the tub changes how the water “loses” heat and CO₂.
When CO₂ escapes (which it still does even with a cover), pH goes up.
When the water cools even a few degrees before the heater kicks in, pH can drift down.
So even with the lid closed, winter still impacts water movement, temperature cycles, aeration, and chemical activity — all of which influence pH balance.
