How to get your hot tub ready for winter:
Check Your Owner’s Manual
Begin by referring to your hot tub’s owner’s manual. It may contain specific recommendations for winterizing your particular model.
Drain and Clean the Hot Tub with Clean Start by SilkBalance:
If you plan to shut down your hot tub for the winter, start by draining it. This is essential to prevent freezing and damage. As you drain it, use a hose-end water filter to ensure the water you use for refilling is clean. After draining, give the interior of the tub a thorough cleaning to remove any debris or residue.
Remove and Clean the Filters:
Take out the filters and clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the filters are old or worn, it might be a good time to replace them.
Protect the Plumbing:
To prevent water from freezing in the plumbing and causing damage, use a wet/dry vacuum or an air compressor to blow out any remaining water from the jets, plumbing lines, and equipment. This step is crucial in cold climates.
Disconnect and Store Accessories:
Remove and store any accessories like steps, handrails, or floating thermometers that could be affected by winter weather. Store them in a dry and protected area.
Winterize the Spa Cover:
Clean it and apply a vinyl protectant to keep it in good condition. Ensure the cover’s straps and clips are secure, and use a cover cap or tarp to protect it from snow and ice.
Maintain Water Levels:
If you plan to keep your hot tub running during the winter, monitor the water level regularly. Ensure it stays above the skimmer or jets to prevent damage to the pump.
Maintain the Water Chemistry:
Test the water chemistry and make adjustments as necessary to maintain balanced pH and sanitizer levels. Cold weather can affect water chemistry, so monitor it periodically. Add SilkBalance once per week.
Regularly Check for Snow Buildup:
If it snows heavily in your area, regularly remove snow from the cover to prevent excess weight from damaging it.
By following these steps and considering your specific climate and hot tub model, you’ll ensure your hot tub is ready for winter. Regular maintenance and attention to detail will help protect your investment and keep it in excellent working condition for years to come.
